I have a habit of starting with my curated playlists, but every now and then, I let myself wander, allowing new voices to surprise me. One such voice was Sheil Sagar, whose rendition of "If I Tried" unexpectedly found its way to my ears.
I wasn’t in any specific emotional zone, but the music and his voice transported me to a space of despair and vulnerability. The song stirred deep introspection, self-doubt, and a longing for connection—or perhaps, simply understanding. It’s a perfect companion for moments of reflection on love, loss, or personal growth. Its tender lyrics and bittersweet tones make it profoundly relatable on multiple levels.
Curious to learn more, I Googled him—only to be heartbroken by the discovery that Sheil Sagar passed away at the age of 22 on June 1st, 2022. The cause of his death remains unknown. A tweet from one of his friends urging people to support independent artists struck a chord with me.
It reminded me of the countless artists juggling mundane jobs just to make ends meet, while others persist, driven by sheer passion to create despite the odds. Here's to all those who struggle daily to align their passion with their profession.
Music has always been my lifeline. It keeps me grounded, gives me company in every emotion I feel—even during moments of emptiness. To every independent artist who picks up their guitar and sings, know this: your music helps many of us survive one day at a time. It certainly does for me.
Inspired by this, I’ve created a playlist of songs that I love. Some moved me with their lyrics, others captivated me with their melodies, and a few stood out for both. This playlist features a selection of Indian male artists who sing in English—some of whom no longer reside in India, but all of whom have left an indelible mark with their unique sound. It’s a celebration of their talent, their voices, and the way they connect through their music, transcending borders.
So, here’s my invitation: Listen to these songs, and support independent artists. They pour their hearts into their art to heal and uplift us. It’s time we show them our appreciation and support in return.
