Language: English
Genre: Family (sort of)
My recommendations are always twisted. No, really, I mean it. They often come with tags like violence, dark, thriller, psycho, sex, and strong language.
But recently, a new addition popped up on my screen and I watched UNCLE FRANK.
The story revolves around a boy named Frank who grows up without a family simply because he is gay. Set in the 1960s-70s, it portrays an era where being gay was considered a sin. Hmm, I don’t remember much changing even in 2020. I mean, there's been some progress, but not nearly enough.
The reason I clicked play on this movie was because I noticed it was directed by Alan Ball. No, I didn’t know who Alan Ball was until I saw the section "KNOWN FOR: American Beauty, Six Feet Under..." So naturally, he had me at American Beauty. Back in the day, that was one of the most shocking movies I watched. Kevin Spacey was outstanding, and that scene—I'm sure you all know which one I mean. So yes, the idea of watching a movie by the same director who did American Beauty made me watch this film.
Apologies, I tend to judge movies too quickly. But with this one... I was drawn into their world right from the first scene. The narration was simple yet carried moments of hidden depth. The relationships were handled with respect, dignity, and integrity. The casting was brilliant, and all the actors seemed perfectly suited to their roles in the movie.
So, if you're looking for a serious yet calming and soul-searching kind of film with great dialogues, this is definitely worth your time.
My rating: "I loved it!"
