This movie is particularly a very special film to me. My elder son was a child when the first part was released, and now, as a teenager, he can relate to the character who is also a teenager. It's a unique experience to watch these characters grow up alongside my own children. Animation films don't often move me deeply, but Coco is an exception. Coco is a must-watch for both adults and kids, teaching the importance of remembering those who have passed away and why they should be cherished. It’s a film I hold very close to my heart.
Inside Out 2 delivered a powerful lesson that brought me to tears at times. The film explores how we often conform to others' perceptions of who we are and accept these as our true personalities without question. It highlights the importance of exploring and understanding our own personalities, especially during the teenage years. The emotions and feelings that come with each significant age are complex and sometimes hard to grasp. While Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust were managing on their own, new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Boredom, and Embarrassment enter the scene as Riley hits her teenage years. And there is a nano introduction to Sar-Chasm as well.
The movie touches on memories, repressive memories, the need to fit in, changing ourselves to be cool, the anxiety a teenager feels from being neglected or feeling pressured to be accepted, and the suppressed emotions when new emotions take over. Anxiety, in particular, plans far ahead for the future while messing up today! Every minute of the film felt relatable, not only to me but also to my son, who is still going through these experiences at 16. A quick look into the consoles of the parents gives us our perspective, showing how we view them from our world to theirs.
The film beautifully portrays the various emotions residing within us and how they need to adapt and loosen up. It emphasizes that no one has a predetermined personality; we adapt, change, and survive. While morals and values are important, everything else evolves as we grow. If you have a teenager at home, I highly recommend watching this film with them. It will take you back to your own teenage years while also helping you understand whether you are inadvertently stifling your own teenager’s growth and individuality.
