I recently traveled to the Bahamas. No, that's not the highlight here. Before leaving, I downloaded all episodes of Guns and Gulaabs to binge-watch during the trip.
And my, oh my, is it worth binge-watching!
Everything about the series—from the characters to the dialogues to the mannerisms of each character—stays with you long after you finish watching.
They didn't explicitly tell you it's an 80s story, but it gradually grows on you. The songs, old-school ways, jhankaar beats cassettes, typical styles of dressing, and the unforgettable hairstyles set the scene perfectly.
Arjun, played by Dulquer Salmaan, Paana Tipu, played by Rajkumar Rao, and Chaar Cut Atmaram, played by Gulshan Devaiah, are the highlights of the entire series.
The innocent love affair of Tipu, the ruthlessness of Atmaram, and the shrewdness of Arjun are all laid out in the open, with no complexities, making it easy to understand and enjoy.
Don’t watch Guns and Gulaabs expecting a deep takeaway. There's nothing to take home except for the fact that Raj & DK truly know their craft. What saved the series is the impeccable casting. Adarsh Gourav as Jugnu a.k.a Chhotu Ganchi, TJ Bhanu as Lekha, and Satish Kaushik as Senior Ganchi were all splendid.
The parallel story of the kids was seamlessly fused with the adult narratives. Everything flowed so comfortably together that it felt like watching a Malayalam film—though not made by a Malayalee.
We Mallus are very proud of our films for their script and style of narration. Raj & DK, I hereby knight thee into the Honorable Order of being a Malayalee of the Highest Order. Arise and be recognized.
If you're okay with some basic gore and gaali galoch and want to reminisce about the 80s in its own delectable fashion, then this series is for you.
Dulquer abusing was the cutest abuse ever. Every time he appears on screen, he makes the world such a delightful place to live in 😊.
Sorry, I am a Malayalee in awe of him and his sheer talent and ease in fitting into Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and now even Hindi scripts.
This is a series I don't mind watching again and again! I'm eagerly awaiting the next season, but only if it carries forward the same cast.
